On Wednesday October. 6/2010 the two leading mayoral candidates, mayor Sam Katz and Judy Wasylycia-Leis held a debate at Red River College’s Princess street campus. Since little in the way of new platform points were revealed, I thought I would focus more on each of the candidates’ “theatrical” performances.
Right off the bat I have to say that Mr. Katz really impressed me with his quick wit, organization, and most importantly his attitude. While there were many quick jabs exchanged between the two candidates, Katz was always prepared to change tones and get down to business. You can tell he’s had practice because he knew exactly when to raise his voice, elevating it to a tone that could make a grocery list sound important.
Visually, Katz portrayed a man who was very organized and very informed. He had no papers shuffling in front of him, he wasn’t taking notes, he was listening.
Ms. Wasylycia-Leis approach to the debate was somewhat different. She wasn’t quite as sharp as Katz, not quite as organized. Her answers frequently went long, she attempted to interrupt Katz on many occasions (she failed each time to overthrow his voice) and she was constantly shuffling through papers and taking notes.
Now this isn’t to say one debate strategy is stronger than the other, but I did feel that Mr. Katz’s presence was much stronger than Ms. Wasylycia-Leis’s. I went into the debate being relatively neutral towards both, but came out with a clear vote in mind.
Oh and Mr. Katz was drinking water with lemon while Ms. Wasylycia-Leis was drinking a whip cream filled Iced Cap…I thought that was interesting.
